15 December 2005 - Change Control Board Last week at Frascati, we successfully established the baseline configuration that will serve as the basis for the ILC reference design and costing to be carried out next year. There was consensus on most decisions. -- By Barry Barish
8 December 2005 - Frascati News This week the GDE is in Frascati, Italy. We have come together for what is only our second face-to-face meeting, following our kick-off meeting as part of the Snowmass workshop just over three months ago. -- By Barry Barish
1 December 2005 - One Tunnel or Two Should we build the ILC using one underground tunnel? Or should we build it using two adjacent tunnels, one containing the support instrumentation and the other containing the accelerator? -- By Barry Barish
23 November 2005 - Damping Ring Recommendation Reaching the luminosity goals of the ILC will be an enormous challenge. It will require producing nanometer scale beam spots at the collision point and a crucial element in achieving this will be to damp the beams that come from the electron and positron sources to have ultra-low emittance. -- By Barry Barish
17 November 2005 - Progress with the BCD Today I am going to give an update on our progress towards the Baseline Configuration Document, BCD. The major goal of the GDE this calendar year is to produce a baseline configuration for the ILC and to document it by the end of 2005. -- By Barry Barish
10 November 2005 - Funding Agencies for the Linear Collider All of us recognize that the ILC will be too expensive to be undertaken by one country or even probably, by one region. For that reason, ground-breaking steps have been taken to internationalize the effort from the very beginning. -- By Barry Barish
3 November 2005 - Cape Town Last week, I visited Cape Town, South Africa with Jonathan Dorfan, a native of Cape Town, and Shin-ichi Kurokawa. -- By Barry Barish
27 October 2005 - Positron Production Last week I discussed the recommendation from Snowmass for the baseline electron source to be used for the linear collider reference design, and today I will briefly discuss the more challenging positron source. -- By Barry Barish
20 October 2005 - Electron Source As I have discussed the past couple of weeks, the baseline ILC design will be guided and flow from a set of overall requirements. These requirements began from the science goals or requirements that were then translated into technical requirements for an accelerator. -- By Barry Barish
13 October 2005 - Global Group 1 As I discussed in this column last week, the starting point for us in determining the baseline configuration for the ILC is a set of top-level physics parameters agreed to by the global community and contained in a report created by an international ICFA / ILCSC subcommittee dated September 30, 2003 and entitled, Parameters for the Linear Collider. -- By Barry Barish

6 October 2005 - Parameters for the Linear Collider The main goal of the GDE this fall is to determine a baseline configuration for the ILC. This baseline will serve as the basis for the reference design process that we will carry out next year. -- By Barry Barish
29 September 2005 - Partnerships with Industry It is important for all of us who are developing the technologies, designs and plans for the ILC to recognize that the majority of the construction of the actual machine will be done by industry. -- By Barry Baris
22 September 2005 - External Entities My job as GDE Director has been defined by the International Linear Collider Steering Committee in the Annex of the MOU between collaborating institutions. -- By Barry Barish
15 September 2005 Snowmass is now behind us and we are ready to begin to assess the outcomes from that successful workshop and to move on to our challenging next goal for this fall, to create a baseline configuration and alternatives for the ILC. -- By Barry Barish
8 September 2005 - EDMS EDMS. All of us in the ILC design community need to become familiar with this acronym. -- By Barry Barish
1 September 2005 The two-week linear collider workshop at Snowmass is now over. Both the 2nd ILC Workshop and the 2005 International Linear Collider Physics and Detector Workshops were great successes. -- By Barry Barish
25 August 2005 One of the liveliest and most interesting working groups at Snowmass has been the so-called cost/engineering global group. -- By Barry Barish
18 August 2005 I have been writing the Director's Corner weekly since 8 June 2005, and this edition represents my tenth column. It was never my intent that the Director's Corner be a standalone communication, but rather that it be part of a weekly newsletter. -- By Barry Barish
10 August 2005 Next week the Snowmass ILC Workshop will begin. More than 600 participants have already signed up. Snowmass promises to be a very exciting and productive two weeks for the ILC. -- By Barry Barish
3 August 2005 The Worldwide Study of the Physics and Detectors for Future e+e- Linear Colliders has played a key role in organizing the global efforts on physics and detectors for the ILC. -- By Barry Barish
27 July 2005 I am often asked where the ILC will be sited The mere fact that I am asked such a question tells me that some of you think we know more than we are revealing about where the ILC will eventually be located. -- By Barry Barish
20 July 2005 Almost a year ago, the International Technology Recommendation Panel recommended that the linear collider be based on superconducting RF technology. The panel report added some important comments regarding this technology. -- By Barry Barish
13 July 2005 This week, the "8th ACFA Workshop on Physics and Detectors at the Linear Collider" is being held in Daegu, Korea. ACFA stands for the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators. -- By Barry Barish
6 July 2005 Early this morning, I participated in a teleconference of the FALC Resources Group. Today, I will share some information about that meeting and group, as well as my own personal thoughts on the importance of FALC. -- By Barry Barish
29 June 2005 As we look forward to the Snowmass Workshop, I want to describe events that followed the technology decision that I reviewed last week. I will also describe how the ILC design effort has been organized over the past year. -- By Barry Barish
22 June 2005 Today, I want to briefly describe the process that led to choosing superconducting rf technology as the basis of the main linac technology for the global design effort. -- By Barry Barish
16 June 2005 Last week in my first Director's Corner I primarily discussed this interim webpage and our plans to use it as a regular way of informing the community about what is going on with the GDE. I also discussed the importance of the Snowmass workshop in August, where we will take the first decisions on the configuration that we will use as the baseline for a conceptual design for the ILC. -- By Barry Barish
8 June 2005 This is our new GDE communications web page, which we have installed on the Interactions.org Linear Collider Communication website. It represents what will become an important tool for us to inform each other and the community what is going on with the GDE. -- By Barry Barish
